At the official ceremony marking the Day of the University of Novi Sad held on 28th June 2017 at the Amphitheatre of the Central University Building, an honorary doctorate was conferred on Prof. Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novaković, Full Professor at Columbia University in New York and one of the world leaders in the field of tissue engineering.
On thаt occasion, Rector of the University of Novi Sad Prof. Dr. Dušan Nikolić awarded Prof. Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novaković an honorary doctorate diploma of the University and a University medallion. As part of the conferral ceremony, Prof. Dr. Vunjak-Novaković held an inaugural lecture entitled Tissue Engineering for Medical Applications.
The public ceremony of conferral of the new honorary doctorate was held on the plateau in front of the Central University Building. Members of the Academic Cultural and Art Society ʻSonja Marinkovićʼ Milan Petrović (tapan) and Dragiša Antić (bagpipes) gave the accompanying musical performance with motifs from the Pupin’s folk dance composed in 1916 in Los Angeles, the United States of America.

Prof. Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novaković is a Serbian-American bioengineer, Full Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences at Columbia University in New York since 2005, where she runs a laboratory with more than 40 researchers. In 2017 she was promoted to the rank of University Professor, the most prestigious academic rank reserved for only 16 out of four thousand professors at Columbia University. Professor Vunjak-Novaković is one of the world leaders in the field of Tissue Engineering. Her laboratory has developed new methods based on stems cells, biomaterials and bioreactors for the regeneration of the heart, lungs and bones and ʻorgans on a chipʼ models of human physiology and pathology (cancer, heart failure, fibrosis, inflammation).
