The 57th International Congress of Americanists ICA was held in Brazilian city Foz do Iguaçu from 17th to 21st July 2023. On 20th July the Permanent Board and the Assembly of this prestige scientific congress unanimously brought the decision that the host of the 58th edition will be the University of Novi Sad.
On behalf of the University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Philosophy, and the co-organisers, the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Technology, the candidature in Brazil was presented by Prof. Dr. Bojana Kovačević Petrović, Head of the Ibero-American Center of the Faculty of Philosophy with the support of Dr. Dejan Mihailović from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. The presentation encompassed a detailed report about the Ibero-American Center, the Faculty of Philosophy and the University of Novi Sad, as well as of the city of Novi Sad and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Furthermore, the candidature also included a strong support from the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy Prof. Dr. Ivana Živančević Sekeruš, statements by the Mayor of the City of Novi Sad Milan Đurić, the Provincial Secretary for Higher Education and Scientific Development Prof. Dr. Zoran Milošević, the Rector of the University of Novi Sad Prof. Dr. Dejan Madić, and the Professor Emeritus of the State University of Rio de Janeiro Dr. Maria Teresa Toribio Lemos. The presentation also included 12 official letters of support from: CLASCO – the biggest network for research of the Latin America and the Caribbean from Buenos Aires, the IDEAZ Institute in Vienna, Brazilian Embassy in Serbia, Society of Hispanists in Serbia, the PEN Centre in Argentina, the University of Szeged, the Andrzej Dmbič Foundation from Warsaw, Society od Hispanists of Middle Europe from Timisoara, Embassy of Argentina in Serbia, NUCLEAS Institute from Rio De Janeiro, Embassy of Mexico in Serbia and the Touristic Organisation of Novi Sad.
Apart from the fact that the Congress ICA is one of the most prestigious and long-lasting world scientific congresses, it is of exceptional importance that Novi Sad will host the Congress on the occasion of ICA 150th anniversary. Between 1500 and 3000 researchers from all over the world are expected to come to Novi Sad, working on research on the North, Central and South America in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, religion, new technologies, human rights, education, culture studies, economy, philosophy, sociology, history, politics, linguistics and literature, gender studies, migrations, social movements, international relations and indigenous people. The Congress in Novi Sad is also expected to introduce an additional field: the relations between the Balkans and the America.
